This is Goldie. She entered my life and my heart over 17 years ago. She was a birthday present from my son Jacob. We have had several family members of the furry variety over the years but Goldie was one of my favorites. Jacob and I selected Goldie from a pet store in Idaho Falls. She was not a kitten as you might suspect but she was a full sized cat. I thought she was beautiful and I was drawn to her by her large round eyes and her gentleness.
Goldie had been raised as a kitten by the staff at Peaches Pets. She was brought to them after her mother had been hit by a car and killed. They fed her with a special bottle and cared for her until the day that Jacob purchased her. Since her only "parents" had been human, she bonded with us right away. Her personality and intelligence quickly became apparent.
She was a cat who loved to be held. She would stand on the floor looking up at you, wiggle her rump, and wait for you to hold out your arms to her, then she would jump into your arms, nuzzle her head into your neck and put her paws around your neck and hug you.
My daughter, Jessica loves cats so her brothers would tease her about cats being less intelligent than dogs. She said that she could train a cat to do tricks just like a dog and they challenged her to do so. She trained Goldie to sit and to roll over on command. She would give Goldie cat treats or (strangely) raisins as a reward. Goldie loved to show her tricks to everyone.
Goldie was not an outdoor cat so we were taken by surprise to find out she was expecting kittens. As the time neared for the kittens to be born, she created a place on the floor in Jessica's closet. We moved her "nest" to a more suitable place in our house but she kept moving it back to Jessica's closet so that is where she had her kittens.
The kittens were born on a Saturday evening. We suspected something was up when she came out into the living room where we were all together and started meowing and pacing for us to follow her. This was strange behavior for her as she rarely made any sounds other than purring. She led us into Jessica's room and proudly show us one tiny kitten. She followed the same pattern with the birth of each additional kitten, three in all. Late that evening we saw that she was struggling with the birth of one kitten. The next morning she was clearly in distress and I felt that she was dying. We called the Vet and he agreed to meet us at his clinic. He had to perform a surgery on her to remove the final kitten which had died. The Vet said that Goldie would have died too if we had not taken her to him.
Goldie was a playful cat. Jacob and Joseph loved to tease her. She liked cat toys and would hide them all over the house. She became very attached to my 3 youngest children and would be so happy when they would come to visit after they had left home.
When I married Sherwin he wasn't sure he liked the idea of a house cat but he quickly became attached to her too although he pretended to be irritated by her. Many times I would catch him petting her when he thought nobody was watching. He affectionately caller her "moldy".
Goldie loved our new home once she became adjusted to her new surroundings. She had always been afraid of being outside but gradually she ventured out and became a good hunter. Although she was declawed, she brought us many "presents" of mice and birds which she would proudly leave on our door step. One time we were having a pot luck party on our patio, and she brought us a mouse as her contribution.
She was protective of our home too. She would chase off the neighbor's Labrador (Sammy) although he could have swallowed her in one bite if he was so inclined. Sammy and Goldie eventually became friends. When Goldie was dying, Sammy brought her his stuffed tiger and laid it by her cat bed. After she passed away, Sammy came to me and nuzzled against me as it to offer his sympathy.
It was a sad thing for me to watch Goldie grow old and arthritic. I will miss her companionship. She was a lap cat when I watched television or was on my computer. She always came to greet me when I came home. I will miss her terribly.

Water Aerobics
I love my water aerobics class! I got lucky with a great instructor. She methodically works all areas of your body as well as working on your balance and coordination. We have a 60 minute session 3 times a week. I think it has helped me lose inches. I enjoy the women (and occasional men) in my class. We enjoy a brisk workout followed by relaxing in the hot pool.
I am the 3rd person from the left. My instructor is in the front.
Below are some facts I got off the internet.

Water Aerobics
-
Water aerobics classes are generally offered through a gym with a pool like the YMCA. Water aerobics instructors are highly trained and must be certified. The instructor starts by getting everyone in waist-deep water. She will start out with very low-impact warm-up, such as jogging in place. She will increase the intensity and speed of the exercises for about 30 minutes of actual aerobic activity. She will then guide the class through a series of cool-down exercises and stretches. Some instructors add strength training work to the class.
Calories are Burned During Water Aerobics
-
While intensity can be varied by the participant, the Activity Profile of NutriStrategy Nutrition and Fitness Software calculates that most water aerobics classes enable the student to burn about 236 calories per hour if the student is a female weighing approximately 130 lbs. If she weighs 155 lbs., she can burn about 281 calories, and if she is closer to 190 lbs., she can expect to burn about 345 for an hour workout.
The calorie differences are due to the fact that it takes more energy to push a larger mass through water. Thus, a 125-lb. woman wouldn't require the same number of calories to push her weight through water as a 190-lb. woman would require for her weight.

Retirement
People often make grand plans for their retirement and I was not so different. Some of them I have followed through with and some of them are still on my bucket list. Since Sherwin and I each have large families, one of my goals was to visit our children and grandchildren. This is a time consuming task since we have 13 children between us and only 2 of them live in the immediate area.
I wanted to golf more. I talked my sister Judy into being my partner and we joined the Idaho Falls Working Women's League. This is kind of laughable as neither of us are very competitive. We laughed (a lot) at ourselves and each other. Most of the ladies were fun to be with and patient with our lack of skills. We learned to ignore those who weren't and just have some fun in the fresh air. I golfed a lot with Sherwin too. Before the season was over my game had improved (somewhat) and I had tan legs to prove I wasn't a couch potato.
Sherwin and I were also called to serve at the Idaho Falls Humanitarian Center. I have been astonished by the service of the people in this community! People are basically good and want to help. You never get to see that by watching the news but it is a fact. We produce goods and collect donations of goods for the needy in the Idaho Falls and surrounding areas. Some of the organizations we help are:
The City of Refuge (a men's homeless shelter)
Ruth House (a battered women's shelter)
Club Inc. (serving the homeless)
All of the local hospitals
Local Nursing/Rehabilitation Homes
All of the alternative schools
Sheppard's Inn (a home for unwed mothers)
The Salvation Army
The American Red Cross
Local churches (all faiths)
All schools
The best part of volunteering is the opportunity to work with such amazing, unselfish, good people. I love them all.
I have also been working on my personal goal to be fit and healthy. I joined Weight Watchers www.weightwatchers.com and I do water aerobics at the Aquatic Center. I am happy to report that since last February, I have lost 26 pounds and the doctor has been able to cut my blood pressure medicine in half. I hope to be able to do away with it altogether.
Sherwin and I also joined a photography club. Although photography is more Sherwin's hobby, I love going on photo shoots with him and I like editing the photos in Photoshop. This is one of the photos that Sherwin shot in Alpine Wyoming. He got another great shot of the same mountain goat that was published in the Post Register (our local newspaper).

One of my goals was to give more service. Shortly after I retired, I received a calling from my bishop to be a worker in the Idaho Falls Temple. Sherwin has worked there for years and was happy that I could now go with him. What can I say? It has been amazing. I have discovered how much I still have to learn.

Our Photography Hobby
Sherwin and I enjoy photography. Sherwin shoots a Nikon D300 and I shoot a Cannon Power Shot SX130. That should explain our individual levels of expertise. None-the-less, we both enjoy searching out places where we can get pictures of wildlife or landscapes that are beautiful or unusual.
I love taking candid shots of my grandchildren and other family members. When I have the time, I like to make scrapbook pages to document vacations or special events. I also enjoy making cards.
We recently joined High Desert Photographers Club highdesertphotographers.com. We are learning a lot and having fun too. We are also taking an online Photoshop class that Sherwin's daughter Jeanette gave Sherwin as a birthday gift.
The photo class recommended that we post some of our best pictures on Flickr so the other class members could view our photography. Here is a link to our Flickr account www.flickr.com/photos/crookspix
Here are a few pictures we took at Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge.

Catch Up
I had a friend ask if I still had my blog. I guess I do although I haven't posted anything for 2 years. I thought now might be a good time to catch up.
On March 9, 2012, I retired from East Idaho Credit Union. I had worked there for 15 years. Four of those years were spent at the Main office in Idaho Falls where I was the Assistant Manager to Cindy Mitchell. After that I moved to the Shelley Branch as the Branch Manager. It was a great learning experience for me. I can truthfully say that I worked with some amazing people and learned something from all of them. I made some cherished friendships with a lot of our Members too. I will always be grateful for the challenges and the successes that formed me during those years
The Credit Union hosted an open house in my honor. It was held at the Shelley Branch. They served a raspberry filled cake and a raspberry punch. Sherwin made a video with pictures of a lot of the activities my Branch participated in like the Spud Day Celebrations and the floats we made for the parades over the years. I had over 90 people come to the open house who signed my guest book. The nine Branch Managers of the other branches had a party for me too and a dinner at Johnny Carinos. That party was attended by the upper management and back office staff. The co-workers in my branch likewise had a dinner party for me at the local Mexican restaurant. They invited a lot of the people who had previously worked with me in our Branch. It was so nice to see them again. As if that wasn't enough partying and dinners, James, Jessica and Sherwin took me out to celebrate. I was honored by all the love and support of my family, friends and co-workers.
